Teaching Children About Pride Month
June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month! We’re shining a spotlight on ways we can support, learn and celebrate throughout the month (and year)!
Tierra Encantada at Twin Cities Pride!
Twin Cities pride is a celebration that makes everyone feel welcome (one of our values!). This year, Tierra Encantada is a sponsor of the event, and we couldn’t be more excited. Be sure to stop by our booth- complete with photo stations and kids activities- in the Youth Hideaway area!
A Brief History of Pride!
Pride is a month-long celebration that happens every June (although there are pride events throughout the entire year)! It originated at the Stonewall Inn, a place where, in the 1960’s, the LGBTQ+ community felt safe to express themselves without fear. You may have hear the phrase, “The First Pride Parade was a Riot.” Here’s why that is: on June 28th, 1969, the police raided the inn and tried to arrest the patrons. The LGBTQ+ community felt this targeting was unfair, and protested- leading the police to eventually back down!

Pride in the classroom
Every family and each little one should feel comfortable, represented and welcomed, from the moment they walk into their classroom. Our classrooms are designed to create those feelings of comfort and belonging, while embracing all identities.
Our cozy reading areas are full of books with different families and dynamics. One of our classic favorites is Heather Has Two Mommies, and a new favorite book of ours is Ahora Me Llamo Luisa, a book about gender and friendship!
This month, one of our dress up days is Rainbow Day! We’re encouraging all little ones and families to come in their brightest outfits and pride apparel!
Pride and inclusion through language
Be conscious of your words! Swap out “mom and dad” for “parents”, “brothers/sisters” for “siblings”. A lot of jobs are gendered, too- use firefighter, police officer and mail carrier instead of the common ending “man”!
Inclusive language is one of the best ways to practice being an ally!
