Helado en una Bolsa (Ice Cream in a Bag)

A delicious STEM activity!

How this uses STEM:

This activity is an example of an exothermic reaction! The salt on the ice makes everything colder- but how? The salt adds a thin layer on top of the ice, and saltwater has a lower freezing point!


  • 1/2 cup Half & Half
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla
  • Salt
  • Ice
  • Large sealable bag
  • Small sealable bag


  1. Fill up your large bag with ice
  2. Pour salt over the ice
  3. In the small bag, add your half & half, vanilla and sugar
  4. Seal the small bag as tightly as possible
  5. Place the small bag into the large bag
  6. Roll and shake the bags for 15-20 minutes or until your ice cream is thick enough to use a spoon for
  7. Enjoy!
